The Diary of Anne Frank

It's a story the world knows by heart: a young Jewish girl's harrowing account of hiding with her family from the Nazis in a tiny attic in Amsterdam. A striking new adaptation restores deleted passages from the diary, offering us a richer look into this extraordinary young woman's coming of age.

By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, adapted by Wendy Kesselman
Directed by ensemble member Tina Landau
Featuring ensemble members Robert Breuler, Francis Guinan, Mariann Mayberry, Yasen Peyankov and Alan Wilder with Kirk Anderson, Jason Bradley, Mark Buenning, Carolyn Faye Kramer, Christopher McLinden, Claire Elizabeth Saxe, Kathy Scambiatterra and Gail Shapiro
In the Downstairs Theatre

Ensemble member Tina Landau, the daring, visionary director of The Time of Your Life and Cherry Orchard, boldly re-imagines this beloved classic.

Jorrit Dijkstra/Tony Malaby Quintet:

East meets Midwest - Dutch Jazz

Jorrit Dijkstra (alto sax, lyricon), Tony Malaby (tenor sax), Fred Lonberg Holm (cello), Jason Roebke (bass), Frank Rosaly (drums)

The Jorrit Dijkstra/Tony Malaby Quintet is a collaboration of free-minded spirits from New York, The Netherlands and Chicago. Malaby and Dijkstra's musical relationship goes back 17 years, during which they have played together in Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, the USA and Canada. Malaby's passionate and highly virtuoso tenor saxophone style and Dijkstra's clear and introvert alto saxophone sound are paired up with Fred Lonberg Holm's idiosyncratic Valentine Trio to create a dynamic and carefully structured free jazz group. This quintet will play original compositions, ranging from simple counterpoint scribbles to graphic scores and game pieces, to function as a springboard for improvisation. The addition of Dijkstra's Lyricon (a vintage analog wind synthesizer) will add an extra twist to the sonic palette.

Downtown Sound Gallery brings jazz and improvised music out of the clubs and into the concert performance context. This improvisation-based music series provides composers and improvisers the opportunity to debut brand new material, created specifically for a brand new ensemble of their choosing, thus realizing new musical possibilities while testing new partnerships.

The series is curated by Umbrella Music, a joint panel of musicians and presenters including Josh Berman, Mitch Cocanig, Mike Reed, Dave Rempis and Ken Vandermark, all well-established Chicago musicians with a strong collective insight into the current state of jazz and improvised music in a city with a lengthy historic involvement in the music.
